Fun Facts Putting Dundee on the Map

Sunday 9th September 2018

Dundee, recently named as a 2018 must-visit European city by Lonely Planet, hailed as the ‘cultural comeback kid’ by CNN, and featured in the stylish Vogue, there’s good reason that so many people and businesses (including us!) are buzzing about Dundee right now!

For those of you looking to discover the city here’s some fun facts to get you started...

Comic Book Heros

Dandy is the world’s third-longest running comic! The first issue was printed in December 1937, and the final printed edition was issued on 4 December 2012, marking the comic's 75th anniversary.

The V&A Museum of Design, due to open mid-September will be the first ever design museum built in the UK outside of London.

Slip, Slap, Slop

Due to Dundee’s South-facing position, the city has more sunshine hours than any other city in Scotland! #sunnydundee

Have Textiles, Will Travel

At one time, and thanks to its burgeoning jute exports, Dundee had the richest square mile in the UK, situated in Broughty Ferry.

Switched On

James Bowman Lindsay invented the incandescent electric lightbulb in Dundee.

According to folklore, Marmalade was first made in Dundee. During bad weather, a ship carrying a cargo of oranges was forced into port at Dundee. The oranges were bought by a local grocer (James Keiller & Sons), whose wife transformed them into marmalade!

The Festival of Discovery

This November North Hop will be bringing it’s spirit filled a-game to the city with Spirit of North Hop Dundee...the Festival of Discovery in the City of Discovery!
