Video Talk w/ 95 Social

Friday 5th October 2018

So now you've seen the teaser it's time to meet the person behind the video! We met Jack via Instagram (as you do) through a mutual connection and on following 95 Social for a while we were keen to learn more about the services he offered and how he allowed video students and new graduates an opportunity to get hands-on experience. So we met up in Dundee over a coffee at Daily Grind (as you do) and now we have some awesome teaser videos for Spirit of North Hop Dundee and a great working relationship to work on future projects!

Over to Jack now to learn more about 95 Social...

I started 95 Social during my final year studying International Business at Heriot Watt University. I was lucky enough to work in a variety of roles alongside my studies including the usual student jobs like bar and restaurant work as well as internships with companies in Hong Kong and Malaysia, whilst studying there during my third year.

Having seen what people my age were capable of in the classroom and at work, I became increasingly frustrated with the theoretical way that students are taught about business and marketing. I believe that in a discipline like marketing you learn best by doing, so when I came back to Edinburgh I decided to start a business giving people my age the opportunity to do just that.

I wanted to build a business that put students and new graduates first, giving them a chance to work on real client projects whilst getting paid. In Malaysia, I had a great experience working with a marketing agency so I set up a student delivered social media agency.

I got a real kick out of starting the business, finding our first clients and seeing our first results. Fast forward one year and we have a group of talented student content creators based in Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Together, we’ve managed campaigns, accounts and created social media content for some amazing businesses and brands across Scotland.

Working with North Hop has been amazing. Michelle’s vision for the festival and her drive to create something truly different has made creating the videos really enjoyable. Over two dates, the two promo videos for this year’s Spirit of North Hop Dundee festival were filmed on location in Dundee by Holly, a recent graduate from Dundee University and Rory a current student at University of the Highlands and Islands.

Dundee is buzzing right now. I’ve yet to find a business community in Scotland that is so ambitious and open to collaboration. November’s North Hop festival will bring many of the cities best independent businesses together under the one roof and is an event not to be missed.

Looking forward, I can't wait to continue working with Scotland’s ambitious and forward thinking businesses whilst giving more students their first taste of commercial work.
